The single biggest factor in a smooth tax appointment is how prepared you are when you walk in. Coming organized saves time, lowers your fee, and makes it far more likely that every credit and deduction you are entitled to actually shows up on your return. Use this checklist to gather what you need before we meet. You will not need every item, but it is better to bring something we do not use than to discover a gap after filing.
Identification and basics
Bring a photo ID and the Social Security numbers or taxpayer identification numbers for yourself, your spouse, and any dependents. If you are a new client, a copy of last year's return is one of the most useful documents you can provide, because it shows carryovers, prior elections, and items that should repeat from year to year.
Income documents
Gather every income statement you received. For most people that means W-2 forms from employers and 1099 forms for contract work, interest, dividends, retirement distributions, and government payments. If you own a business or rental, bring your profit and loss summary along with records of any income that did not generate a form. Investors should bring brokerage statements showing sales, since the cost basis matters for what you owe.
Deductions and credits
This is where preparation pays off. Useful records include mortgage interest and property tax statements, charitable donation receipts, medical and dental expenses, childcare costs with the provider's tax number, student loan interest, tuition statements, and receipts for energy-efficient home improvements. If you are self-employed, bring your expense totals by category along with mileage and home office details.
Life changes from the past year
Tell us about anything that changed. Marriage, divorce, a new child, a death in the family, a home purchase or sale, a move to a new state, starting or closing a business, or a significant change in income can all reshape your return and open up credits you did not have before. These conversations often uncover the largest savings of the whole meeting.
Banking and payment details
Finally, bring a voided check or your routing and account numbers so any refund can be deposited directly, and let us know if you expect to owe so we can plan the payment. With these items in hand, most appointments move quickly and leave you confident that nothing was overlooked.
